Frank Halmans

constantly awakened by soft kisses

The oeuvre of Frank Halmans has nostalgia written all over it, yet never becomes sentimental. It is rather like the magic of the past is constantly awakened by soft kisses. The realization that the past is now gone evokes a sense of melancholy.
The poetic work offers plenty of room for musing. It provides a certain kind of escapism. Next to this, it evokes das Unheimliche (the Uncanny) in the interpretation of Sigmund Freund when he characterised it as the fundamental ability of the familiar to haphazardly become unfamiliar and turn against its owners.

The work of Frank Halmans, although complex in its layered meanings, is among other things about decay, about impossibility, about looking back, about le temps perdu.
