disrupt the associations and interpretations of everyday objects by deforming and adapting familiar figurative elements
Tom Putman’s sculptural objects are familiar and often appropriate symbolism from objects from our daily lives. The outward design of objects is mostly determined by their function. The inextricably link between perception and functionality makes it difficult to perceive the formal qualities of everyday objects, such as their shape, colour and material, without having associations about what the object can do. Putman tries to disrupt the associations and interpretations of everyday objects by deforming and adapting familiar figurative elements.
